Doha, 20 November 2021 (TDI): The United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, Wally Adeyemo, visited Qatar on Thursday. The tour aimed at addressing the situation in Afghanistan and discussing measures to strengthen the bilateral partnership between Doha and Washington.
During the visit, Deputy Adeyemo met with senior government officials and economic leaders of Qatar. They included Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and the state’s Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani.
The US representative also met with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Qatar’s Investment Authority, Mansour Ibrahim Al-Mahmoud, and Finance Minister Ali bin Ahmad Al-Kuwari.

While in Doha, the Qatari officials and Deputy Adeyemo exchanged views on various topics, including equitable growth, the challenges, and opportunities posed by virtual assets, ways to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic, and mitigating the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
In addition, the two sides affirmed to collectively tackling illicit finance. They also exchanged views on the ‘bipartisan infrastructure bill’ recently passed by US President Joe Biden that aims to support global growth and enhance the productive capacity in Washington’s economy.
Bilateral Relations
Qatar and the United States of America formally established diplomatic relations in 1972 following Qatar’s independence from Britain in 1971. The two states enjoy a cordial relationship based on wide-ranging cooperation in various fields, including military, economy, and politics.
In order to maintain regional stability, the two states have also made collective efforts to tackle several regional and global crises, such as ensuring safe evacuations of numerous Afghans after the Taliban took over Kabul in mid-August. Moreover, they have committed to strengthening the US-Qatar defense partnership and countering terrorism in the Middle East.
