US Assistant Secretary of State arrives in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, 28 February 2024 (TDI): The US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Kritenbrink arrives in Cambodia to meet with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet.

According to a released statement by the Asia Pacific Media Hub, both leaders had a meaningful discussion on how the US can deepen its relationship with Cambodia and address issues of mutual concern.

The leaders discussed a range of existing cooperation including the DPRK Union sanctions enforcement, condemning Russia’s attack on Ukraine, foreign assistance programs, and law enforcement.

Moreover, Cambodia’s areas of progress such as democracy and human rights, trafficking in persons, and creating space for free and independent media are of significant importance.

In addition, the US Assistant Secretary underscored the US commitment to the Cambodian people. He iterated that the US supports their aspirations for a more prosperous and democratic country.

Furthermore, he said, “The US supports an independent country where all voices are heard and respected.”

The US Assistant Secretary of State engaged with Cambodian Alumni of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) on the 10th anniversary of the regional exchange program.

US-Cambodia Bilateral ties

Reportedly, the US engagement with Cambodia lies on a broader strategy. The US and Cambodia share efforts to upgrade military and humanitarian cooperation.

Moreover, they highlight a shared commitment to peace, security, and prosperity in the region. Also, both states continue to unfold the potential for deeper engagement and collaboration on a positive approach.

The US and Cambodia share an emphasis on highlighting the importance of the ASEAN partnership. According to reports, the Jedidiah Royal reaffirmed US commitment to Cambodia in demining operations and search for missing Americans in the Cambodian territory.

Lastly, Cambodia aspires to live in a peaceful environment with its neighbors.
