China’s Foreign Minister addresses Fukushima Water Discharge

Beijing, 28 February 2024 (TDI): China’s Foreign Minister, Mao Ning, addressed issues related to the Fukushima Water Discharge and the Ukraine Crisis during the regular press conference on February 28, 2024.

Fukushima Water Discharge

Starting March 2, Special Representative Li Hui will embark on a second round of shuttle diplomacy. The purpose is to seek a political settlement of Ukraine’s issue.

Responding to queries regarding Japan’s Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water discharge, Mao Ning expressed China’s firm opposition.

Furthermore, she highlighted Japan’s disregard for international law and urged Japan to halt the discharge immediately.

Mao Ning emphasized the grave impact of the discharge on global health and the marine environment.

She called for Japan’s cooperation in setting up an independent international monitoring arrangement to mitigate irreversible consequences like those faced in Japan’s Fukushima  water discharge.

China urges Peace in Ukraine

On being asked about the Ukraine crisis, Mao said, “It has been two years since the full escalation of the Ukraine crisis began. As the conflict drags on, the most urgent priority now is to restore peace. The sooner peace talks begin, the less damage is done.”

Regarding Li Hui’s diplomatic mission, Mao Ning stressed the urgency of restoring peace in Ukraine.

In addition to this, she reiterated China’s commitment to facilitating peace talks and building consensus among conflicting parties.

Addressing concerns raised about French President Macron’s statement on Western troop deployment in Ukraine, Mao Ning emphasized China’s consistent stance.

Moreover, she called for de-escalation and a ceasefire, advocating for a political settlement of the crisis.

Additionally, she expressed concern over activities infringing on China’s territorial sovereignty and emphasized China’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
