Beijing, 2 May 2024, (TDI): Following a fatal road collapse that left several people dead in Guangdong Province, south China, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for all-out efforts to rescue and cure those injured.
Dozens of people have died in a tragic road collapse in Guangdong Province, of South China. Efforts to rescue and treat the injured are underway.
President Xi Jinping calls for aid
Xi Jinping, also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, has stressed the importance of this incident. Instructions for on-site rescue have been given.
Additionally, responders are treating the injured and effectively managing the situation. Repairing damaged roads and restoring traffic order is a priority, according to Xi Jinping.
Moreover, all regions and relevant departments must adhere to bottom-line thinking. They must consolidate work responsibilities, strengthen monitoring, and provide early warning.
In addition to this, Xi advised to improve emergency plans, investigate potential risks, and ensure safety and social stability.
Li Qiang is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. In addition to this, he is the premier of the State Council.
Qiang has been instructed to spare no effort in rescuing the injured. He ordered to carry out follow-up work and searches for trapped people while guarding against secondary risks.
The ongoing May Day holiday and widespread rainfall in some areas heighten the need for preventive efforts. This is to avoid accidents and disasters.
Working groups from the Ministry of Emergency Management, the Ministry of Transport, and other relevant departments are on-site to guide rescue efforts.
The collapse happened around 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday on the Meizhou-Dabu Expressway in Meizhou, Guangdong Province, early Wednesday morning. The collapsed section is substantial, covering an area of 184.3 square meters.
