-

Beijing, 30 April 2024 (TDI): Climate change discussions will resume in early May. Resuming bilateral discussions on climate cooperation, US climate change envoy John Podesta said on Tuesday that he would visit Chinese counterpart Liu Zhenmin in Washington early in May.

The discussions will be held between US envoy John Podesta and his Chinese counterpart Liu Zhenmin, a Chinese diplomat who currently serves as the Director-General of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) in Washington.

The meeting marks a crucial step in fostering climate cooperation amid broader trade and security tensions. Liu Zhenmin’s upcoming visit to Washington signals a new phase in bilateral climate diplomacy.

US-China Climate Talks Resurface

Although informal conversations have occurred since Liu assumed his role, formal talks between the world’s top emitters have yet to happen.

Podesta confirmed his upcoming meeting with Liu during his visit to the United States. Sources reveal Liu’s itinerary, including planned visits to Washington. The dates are cited as May 8 to May 10, followed by travel to New York.

China’s foreign ministry corroborated Liu’s U.S. visit. It echoed recent diplomatic engagements discussed during Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s trip to China.

The previous collaboration between Kerry and Xie was pivotal in shaping the COP28 Climate Summit’s outcomes in Dubai. It fostered consensus on transitioning away from fossil fuels.

Despite broader tensions, both countries maintained open channels for climate dialogue, exemplifying ongoing diplomatic efforts on critical environmental issues.

The forthcoming talks coincide with recent trade petitions by US solar companies. Moreover, It highlights ongoing trade dynamics impacting renewable energy sectors across regions.

This is Liu’s first visit to Washington in his new role after replacing veteran climate envoy Xie Zhenhua earlier this year due to health reasons. Xie Zhenhua is a veteran Chinese diplomat with several high-ranking positions in China’s Foreign Ministry.

He served as the Chinese ambassador to the United States, Japan, and South Africa, among other posts. Zhenhua’s experience and expertise in international relations make him a valuable asset to the Chinese government.
