UN Women President, Sima Sami Bahous said that “UN Women is deeply concerned and saddened by the death of Mahsa Amini, in Iran, at the age of 22. We convey our heartfelt sympathies to her family”.
This young woman’s death has become a sorrow beyond words. There is a particular cause for concern given the conditions of this sequence of events.
According to UN reports, Mahsa Amini was arrested on September 13 by officials aiming to implement strict dress codes for women. Three days later, while still in detention, she passed away.
There is uncertainty existing regarding her death’s exact causes and events. It is evident that she was imprisoned in a manner that violated fundamental human rights. The tragedy serves itself as a reminder of the abuse that girls and women face on a global scale.
The UN Women President added that “In this context, we echo the call of our colleagues at the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, for a prompt, impartial, and effective investigation by an independent competent authority”.
Since officials in Iran stated on Friday that Mahsa Amini, 22, had died as a result of being detained by the police department in charge of enforcing a dress code for women, public indignation has increased.
Additionally, Amini’s murder has led to protests as well as criticism from higher authorities in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Amini had been in a coma after being jailed for wearing an “improper” headscarf. In Amini’s native area Kurdistan, 500 protesters had gathered on Sunday.
