These decisions were made during the Ordinary Summit which was held in Ghana on 3 July 2022 to lift the economic and financial sanctions on Mali by the ECOWAS.
Moreover, the setting of the transition timeline reflects a successful conclusion. The authorities will conclude the transition by March 2024 at the latest.
Remarks of the UN SG:
The Secretary-General welcomed and encouraged the steps taken by the authorities to observe and evaluate the ongoing transition period.
The Secretary-General also commends the efforts of the ECOWAS Mediator, Goodluck Jonathan, and the Local Transition Follow-up Committee, comprised of members of MINUSMA and ECOWAS. Their efforts made the lifting of the sanctions inevitable.
Furthermore, after evaluating the tireless efforts of the mediator, there can be a continuation of cordial relations and cooperation. He appreciated and expressed expectations from Mali to assist in providing the imperative platform of reforms. Mali will also hold fair elections on the principles of democratic freedom.
Additionally, the Secretary-General compelled the primary stakeholders involved to work together. He said that the transition can be concluded successfully if the collaboration is constructive and cohesive. The foundations of peace and stability are beneficial for the Malian people.
Along with emphasizing the importance of the 2015 Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, he urged the signatories to implement policies that will stabilize and inculcate peace in the region. He said the implementation process is significant, and it should incorporate the meeting on Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR).
Henceforth, the Secretary-General re-emphasized the advocacy of the United Nations. United Nations patronizes peace, stability, and better governance for the people of Mali.
