UN hosts the Sustainable Transport Conference

New York, 18 October 2021 (TDI): The official account of UN DESA’s Division for Sustainable Development Goals on Twitter promotes Sustainable Transport Conference. UN DESA Sustainable Development urged people to attend the conference.


This is the second UN Global Sustainable Transport Conference that started from 14 and ended on 16 October 2021 in Beijing, China. All leaders, the private sector, and civil society globally gather to talk about actions for achieving Sustainable Transport.

It is the follow-up of the first Global Sustainable Transport Conference has taken place in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan in 2016. It underlines the significance of sustainable transport for the accomplishment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Transport boosts economic growth and livelihoods enable the mobility of people and goods while improving access to quality services like health, education, and finance. It builds up connectivity at all levels, facilitating integrated economies, refining social equity, improving rural-urban linkages, and constructing resilience.

However, transport also has adverse environmental, social, and health effects. Around, a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions are from transport; affects sustainability and worsening climate change. To change this, the conference provides a prospect for policy dialogue as well as imitating partnerships and initiatives to develop sustainable transport.
