Rwanda celebrates World Energy Day

-

Kigali, 23 October (TDI): Rwanda celebrates World Energy Day. This remarkable day is celebrated on 22nd October of every year worldwide. Also, United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7.

On account of this day, Rwanda aims to achieve universal access to electricity by 2024 and SDG 7 by 2030. This day promotes the important role of energy in socio-economic development.

However, the Government of Rwanda has made significant efforts towards the goals with the support of other development and private sector partners. Moreover, Rwanda has employed different strategies for the provision of sustainable energy. These strategies will help in boosting sustainable energy for businesses and households.

Rwanda has established a Biomass Energy Strategy to reduce the dependence on biomass from 79.9% (in 2017) to 42% in 2014. This includes financial support to facilitate communities to shift to clean technologies. And partnerships with the private sector and civil society organizations. It helps to distribute these technologies aimed at reducing biomass usage.

However, Rwanda is developing energy efficiency to maintain at least 60% of the generation mix from renewable sources. However, Rwanda has achieved an important step that will enable it to cut down national emissions. It will also help Rwanda reach net-zero emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.
