UAE and Netherlands celebrate Sidrig Kaag’s appointment

Abu Dhabi, 27 December 2023(TDI): The Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs of the UAE, Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, joined the Netherlands in celebrating the recent appointment of Sigrid Kaag as the UN Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Reconstruction in Gaza.

The appointment is in line with Security Council Resolution No. 2720 (2023), which calls for an immediate response to the critical humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

Moreover, Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh expressed confidence in Kaag’s expertise, stating, ‘We are confident that Ms. Kaag’s knowledge and experience will help ensure the prompt and complete implementation of the resolution. This includes monitoring and verifying humanitarian aid deliveries and establishing a United Nations mechanism to accelerate the delivery of aid to Gaza.”

The reports state that the United Arab Emirates praised the Secretary-General for responding to Resolution 2720 promptly.

Furthermore, the decision creates a strong foundation for increasing aid to the Palestinian people. In addition, the United Arab Emirates is dedicated to ensuring the prompt and comprehensive execution of a ceasefire.

On top of that, the UAE aims to receive the coordinator’s initial report and procedure by January 23, 2024, 20 days after the resolution is adopted.

Additionally, the UAE is firm in its appeal for a ceasefire to alleviate Gaza’s suffering and allow assistance to enter, while Resolution 2720 outlines specific actions to help those in need.

The UAE also emphasizes that it is the collective duty of the international community, which includes the UN Security Council and all groups with responsibilities, to support the resolution’s execution and ensure the success of Ms. Kaag in her role as Coordinator and the UN mechanism as a whole.

In a separate announcement, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands declared, “Good news that Sigrid Kaag has been appointed UN Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Reconstruction in Gaza, effective January 8, 2024.”

He emphasized the critical and challenging nature of the role, expressing confidence in Sigrid Kaag’s knowledge and skills to fulfill this assignment like no other. He wished her the best of luck in this vital endeavor.

The Netherlands conveyed enthusiasm about the appointment and committed to assisting in the work of the UN whenever possible. Prime Minister Mark Rutte expressed gratitude for their good connections and cooperation with the government in the past.
