Istanbul, 13 November 2021 (TDI): Turkey hosted the 8th Summit of Turkic Council meeting on Friday. Prior to the summit, Turkish President Erdogan also met the Head of States from member countries.
Leaders
Leaders from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan attended the event.
The leaders went to Democratic and Freedom Island in the Sea of Marmara. The ‘Green Technologies and Smart cities’ concept was the theme of the meeting.
Envisioning Turkistan
Turkish Presidency stated that significant decisions about the functioning and future of the organization are under discussion. This includes the changing of the name to the Organization of Turkic States as well as the adopting ‘Vision Document’.

Istanbul Declaration will be signed after Turkey assumes Presidency of the Organisation from Azerbaijan. The current summit is being labeled as a breakthrough in the journey.
Turkic Council has put forth impressive milestones as a result of great achievements primarily due to capability and capacity to achieve targets.
Observer Status
President Erdogan states that Turkey seeks the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as a member of the Turkic Council.
Hungary and Ukraine are participating as observers. Afghanistan is a prioritized nominee for the next observer status country. 15 more countries have shown interest in attaining observe status.
Member States
The member states such as Turkey occupy a prominent role in regional and global affairs. Kazakhstan is also gaining pace as a critical player in the region. Azerbaijan recently won the Karabakh war. Uzbekistan is progressing in terms of economic development and tourism. Kyrgyzstan has achieved stability with its new Government. Four summits were held in the previous 30 months, which also indicates the pursuit of Turkic countries in developing the organization to the forefront of affairs.
