Trump: US negotiating with Putin to end war

Washington D.C (TDI): The President of the US, Donald Trump, announced that the United States had a “very serious” discussion with Russia about ending its war against Ukraine.

Since taking office on January 20, 2025, Trump has been actively seeking to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine

Trump’s Media talk

In an interview with reporters in the Oval Office, he said:

“We will be speaking, and I think we will perhaps do something significant. We want to end that war. That war would not have started if I were president.”

During the press conference, President Trump did not provide detailed information regarding any direct talks or negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, leaving it unclear whether there are ongoing discussions between the U.S. and Russia.

Trump-Putin Friendship

Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the Russia-Ukraine war and the United States’ involvement in it. He has previously claimed that the conflict would not have started if he had been in office instead of the Biden administration.

Putin lauds Trump

Russian President Vladimir Putin has also praised Trump in various interviews. He praised Trump’s efforts to halt ongoing conflicts and stated:

“We always had a business-like, pragmatic, but also trusting relationship with the current U.S. president.

Additionally, he stated,

“I couldn’t disagree with him that if he had been president, and if they hadn’t stolen victory from him in 2020, the crisis that emerged in Ukraine in 2022 could have been avoided.”

Allegations of close ties between President Trump and President Putin arose when rumours surfaced about Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections. These concerns further intensified when Trump was declared the winner.

Trump has previously sided with Putin, even when the U.S. intelligence officials accused Russia of interfering in the 2016 elections.

Despite these accusations, he has praised the Russian leader, calling him “pretty smart” for overseeing the invasion of Ukraine.
