Trump, Carney Agree to Meet in ‘Near Future’

Ottawa (TDI): US President Donald Trump congratulated Mark Carney on election win, as both leaders spoke on call, on Tuesday. They agreed to meet in “near future.”

About the talk, a statement of the Prime Minister House of Canada read, “The leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the United States working together – as independent, sovereign nations – for their mutual betterment. To that end, the leaders agreed to meet in person in the near future.”

Canada’s official vote count has declared the Liberals victorious in the federal snap election which was announced by Carney in March.

The US became increasingly confrontational with Canada since Donald Trump has assumed the Presidency. Threatening Canada multiple times with annexation and jeopardizing trade by announcing higher tariffs, Canada’s election victory was largely determined by who the Canadians trust in this challenging time.

Both countries are scheduled to start negotiations now that the elections have concluded. The talks will revolve around framing a new economic and security relationship. The talks are expected to be tough and challenging as the US has remained Canada’s largest trading partner over the years.

Canada, and Mark Carney, have responded to Trump’s threats by standing their ground and reiterating Canada’s sovereignty and independence.

Since the election victory, Mark Carney has been receiving felicitations from leaders around the world. Carney has been specifically keen on strengthening relations with European partners, for the short span during which he kept the Prime Minister Office.

His first overseas visit to Europe as the PM is a testimony that winds are changing as Europe and Canada seek more security autonomy and partnerships among themselves.

Having won the election, Carney will not need to be sworn in again. However, he may choose to make changes to his cabinet. Carney’s main rival in the election race was Conservative candidate, Pierre Poilievre.

Carney’s Liberal party has secured 169 of 343 seats and would need help from other parties to pass laws.
