Baku, 17 December 2021 (TDI): This morning, the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, engaged in a telephone interaction with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Makei. The primary topics of discussion were the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Belarus.
THE DISCUSSION
Both parties talked about certain issues relating to the cooperation agenda between their countries. They agreed that avenues of cooperation should be intensified in different fields, such as economy, education, culture, and so on.
Additionally, both ministers also came to a consensus that the Governments of Azerbaijan and Belarus should strive to increase collaboration. In relation to this, they brought up specific objectives and prospects for strengthening their diplomatic relations.
During this telephone interaction, Belarusian Minister Makei expressed appreciation to the Azerbaijani Government on behalf of Belarus, for its continued support.
He then directed his gratitude to the subject of the clause involving Belarus in the Joint Declaration. This was implemented as a consequence of the 6th Eastern Partnership Summit. Minister Makei noted that it was highly commendable how Azerbaijan possessed a constructive approach regarding this, which simultaneously adhered to international law.
Furthermore, both Foreign Ministers also shared their thoughts on the political and territorial issues in their region. They expressed their views regarding the post-conflict relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. At the same time, they also discussed Belarus and its ongoing regional conflicts.
In addition to that, the two sides also exchanged views on additional issues of mutual interest.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF AZERBAIJAN-BELARUS RELATIONS
Bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Belarus are extremely strong. In fact, the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, describes Azerbaijan as being a “saver” of the independence and sovereignty of Belarus. To add to that, he also vehemently states that “there’s not anything close” to Azerbaijani-Belarusian ties.
There is an Azerbaijani embassy in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, whilst its counterpart exists in Baku. Additionally, both nations are also active members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
