Dushanbe, 6 October 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Tajikistan Sharaf Sheralizoda met with Octavian Bivol, Head of the Regional Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). The meeting was held on the evening of 5th October 2022.
The stakeholders discussed several significant aspects of bilateral cooperation. The negotiators discussed the measures to protect the development gains through the reduction of the risk of natural disasters.
They also outlined the connection between natural disasters and climate change. The implementation of the Sendai Framework was the focus of negotiations.
Sendai Framework
Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 is an internationally recognized document. United Nations organization adopted this document at the third world conference on DRR.
It guides UN member states in taking concrete actions to get protection from the risk of disasters. It also assists them to adopt such measures that lead to the protection of the benefit of development from the risk of disaster.

2025: An International Year of Glaciers Preservation
The negotiators also discuss the proposal, presented by the Founder of peace and national unity, the leader of the Nation, and the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon.
He proposed to declare the year 2025 as the international year of glacier preservation. The two parties agreed to concentrate on the effective implementation of this initiative proposed by the President. They also expected fruitful outcomes from all efforts.
The President of Tajikistan presented this proposal to United Nations. He was addressing a high-level thematic debate. The title of the debate was “Delivering Climate Action: for People, Planet and Prosperity”. He also suggested specifying a date for the observation of “World Glaciers Preservation Day”.
The Heads of national disaster management authorities in the Central Asian States organized the regional forum in Dushanbe.
The platform is arranged with the collaboration of the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), World Bank, Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), and Center for Emergency Situations & Disaster Risk Reductions (CESDRR). European Union has funded this forum.
The primary objective is to develop and strengthen regional cooperation in Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation.
