Statement by Vietnamese Ambassador Quy to UN with UNAMI

New York, 26 August 2021 (TDI): Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations Ambassador  made a statement at the UN Security Council in connection with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

In the briefing, Dang Dinh Quy appreciates UNAMI and international organizations and partners for assisting Iraq in the upcoming elections in October. Vietnam joins the international community in supporting the Iraqi people to hold free and fair elections. 

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy stresses the need to ensure security for the electoral process where violence and threats against candidates and those engaged in the elections may jeopardize the credibility and legitimacy of any institutions to be formed by the vote. Thus, calling upon relevant parties in Iraq to take steps to prioritize the security concerns in the lead-up to the elections. 

He further said, Vietnam also supports stronger cooperation between Iraq and other regional countries that can help the country move forward in dealing with common challenges on all fronts. Moreover, with full respect for the territorial sovereignty of the countries concerned, trans-border threats should be addressed. Vietnam commends strong cooperation between the governments of Iraq and Kuwait in the search for missing Kuwaiti and third-country nationals and the return of Kuwaiti property.

Lastly, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy said Vietnam reaffirms its support for UNAMI and UN agencies in assisting Iraq to maintain stability and security as well as to provide humanitarian assistance to people by conflict, poverty, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
