Sri Lankan Foreign Minister meets Australian Counterpart

New York, 22 September 2021 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Gamini Lakshman Peiris held a meeting with his Australian Counterpart, Marise Payne on the eve of the 76th session of UNGA.

Foreign Minister Payne stated that Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison is interested to mark the celebrations of the 75th Anniversary of established diplomatic ties between two countries. Both leaders discussed avenues for enhanced cooperation in a wide spectrum of areas. Also, they discussed issues of human trafficking. Minister Peiris mentioned that Sri Lanka has played a substantial role to combat this illegal activity. He also informed the Australian counterpart on issues related to missing persons and economic development in Sri Lanka by mutual cooperation.

Minister Payne mentioned that there is a need for enhanced cooperation between Colombo and Canberra as well as in the field of intelligence sharing and education. Both sides agreed to work together to enhance the cordial relationship between Colombo and Canberra in the future.
