Kampala, 5 January 2022 (TDI): The Senegalese President, Macky Sall will be taking over in steering the African Union (AU) chairmanship in February.
About Senegal
The Republic of Senegal is a West African country. It is bordered to the north by Mauritania, to the southeast by Guinea, Guinea-Bissau to the southwest, and Mali to the east. Senegal gained its independence on 4 April 1960 from France. In addition, its official language is French. Besides that, according to the World Bank 2020, Senegal estimated population is 16.74 million.
AU Chairmanship Election
In February 2022, the AU will hold its annual heads of state summit. It is expected that at the summit, President Macky Sall of Senegal will take over the annual AU chairmanship from Democratic Republic of Congo’s president Felix Antoine Tshisekedi.
Hence, Macky Sall will be steering the African Union from February for the next year. In the past; however, the chairmanship has been held by Paul Kagame of Rwanda from Jan 2018 to Feb 2019.
In this line, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt ruled from Feb 2019 to Feb 2020, Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa from Feb 2020 to Feb 2021, and Felix Antoine Tshisekedi, the Democratic Republic of Congo from Feb 2021 to Feb 2022.
Current AU Pressing Issues
On the other hand, several issues are awaiting the incoming chairman. These include ensuring a successful transition in the AU Commission elections as well as seizing an opening to engage in Libya.
Furthermore, some other pressing matters include limiting the damage from the Central African Republic electoral chaos, putting politics first in the Sahel, and addressing the fallout from Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict.
Not to mention supporting Somalia during its upcoming elections. In this line, Macky Sall will be the one in charge to take action against these pressing issues.
Macky Sall Chairmanship priorities
On the other hand, the emergence of Macky Sall as AU chairman in February 2022 marks the fourth time in history that Senegal will be steering the AU’s wheel. For example, in 1980, Léopold Sédar Senghor was the chairman. Likewise, Abdou Diouf served in two terms, first in 1985 and last in 1992.
Now it is Macky Sall’s turn to preside over the destiny of the continent for the coming year from February 2022. However, expectations are high. Thus, Macky Sall’s priorities may include managing the Covid-19 pandemic, “transitioning forever” governments, and economic recovery.
