Russian Ambassador called on newly appointed Sri Lankan FM

Colombo, 23 August 2021 (TDI): Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Sri Lanka Yuri B. Mateiry paid a visit to the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris at Foreign Ministry in Colombo.

The newly appointed Sri Lankan Foreign Minister lauded Russia’s efforts in bilateral coordination between the two countries. The Minister also highlighted the significance of the Russia-Sri Lanka friendship and vowed to work for its consolidation. On his part, the Russian Ambassador Yuri B. Mateiry congratulated him on his appointment. Also, he reaffirmed Russia’s firm support for Sri Lanka in every sector including education, trade, culture, science, technology, and counter-terrorism. Both parties also discussed the upcoming Intergovernmental Commission for multi-sector cooperation and the planning for the celebration of the 65th Anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. With that, both sides stressed joint efforts to counter the COVID-19 spread.

The New Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris assumed his responsibilities on 18 August 2021. He replaced Dinesh Gunawardena who is now the  Sri Lankan Education Minister.
