Russia, Pakistan Strengthen Cooperation: Envoy

Islamabad (TDI): Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Albert P. Khorev has said that Russia and Pakistan will focus on cooperation in energy, agriculture, transport and industry sectors, including the modernization of the Karachi Steel Mills in 2025.

He said that Russia stands ready to enhance collaboration with Pakistan on the use of global transport corridors “North-South” and “Belarus-Russia-Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan.”

In an interview with state-owned news organization of Russia, TASS News Agency, the envoy said that the modernization of the Quetta-Taftan railway line is currently being considered, and increasing maritime cargo transportation also holds promise.

He stated that both Russia and Pakistan are committed to strengthening peace and stability in Afghanistan and countering terrorist threats emanating from its soil.

“We support Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts and reaffirm our focus on strengthening constructive collaboration with Pakistan and Afghanistan,” he said.

The envoy said that dialogue on a wide range of common concerns and challenges was already underway within the Moscow Format of Consultations and other multilateral forums that bring together Afghanistan’s neighbours.

He said that amid fundamental transformations in international politics and economy, cooperation within the SCO is becoming increasingly relevant.

“We attach great importance to collaboration with Pakistan in enhancing the SCO’s economic potential, strengthening industrial cooperation, establishing independent financial institutions and payment mechanisms, boosting transport and logistics capabilities and regional inter-connectivity, as well as countering new challenges and threats,” he said.

The envoy said that Russia also enjoys constructive collaboration with our Pakistani partners in the United Nations (UN) and shares positions on many topical issues on the global agenda, such as information security and prevention of an arms race in outer space.
