Beijing, 8 November 2023(TDI): In an address, Chinese President Xi Jinping shared his vision for a shared digital future in the opening ceremony of the 2023 World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit via video on Wednesday 8 November. 

With the theme “A Vision for a Shared Digital Future,” President Xi emphasized the necessity of leveraging the internet’s potential to benefit people worldwide, building upon his vision of a community with a shared future in cyberspace.

Vision for Shared Digital Future

In his address, President Xi reiterated the concept of jointly building a community with a shared future in cyberspace, a vision initially proposed at the second WIC in 2015. 

This vision has since gained international recognition and generated positive responses globally. 

President Xi highlighted the broad-ranging significance of this vision, particularly in addressing contemporary challenges. Here is a highlight of the points raised.

President Xi called for prioritizing development to ensure that the fruits of internet development reach more countries and their people. 

This includes improving public access to information-based services, bridging the digital divide, and enhancing people’s livelihoods through internet development.

Furthermore, President Xi stressed the importance of respecting cyber sovereignty and each country’s approach to internet governance. He called for opposing the pursuit of hegemony, bloc confrontation, and arms races in cyberspace. 

Additionally, the need to combat cybercrimes, strengthen data security, and protect personal information was emphasized.

Moreover, he said that China is committed to working with all parties to implement the Global Artificial Intelligence Governance Initiative, promoting the safe development of artificial intelligence.

President Xi underlined the importance of creating a more equal and inclusive cyberspace, promoting shared human values, and showcasing the achievements of human civilizations. Efforts in this regard include the creation of high-quality online cultural products and the active promotion of civilization preservation and development. 

The 2023 World Internet Conference serves as a crucial platform for international dialogue and collaboration on internet-related issues.

President Xi’s address underscores China’s commitment to advancing a more open, cooperative, and secure global cyberspace for the benefit of all.
