Pakistan’s PM meets President of Azerbaijan to enhance bilateral ties

Baku, 15 June 2023 (TDI): Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shahbaz Sharif, met with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, at the Zugulba Palace today.

This meeting was arranged when Pakistan’s Prime Minister was on an official visit to Azerbaijan. The purpose of the meeting was to review the present state of bilateral relations and find new avenues to enhance these brotherly ties.

During the meeting, both leaders discussed a range of issues, including trade, investment, energy cooperation, regional security, and higher education.

They expressed their commitment to further deepen the bilateral ties between their countries and explore new areas of cooperation. Sharif also conveyed Pakistan’s support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh and thanked Azerbaijan for their support on the issue of Indian-Occupied Kashmir.

The two leaders agreed to continue working closely together at international forums to promote peace and stability in the region. Both countries share strong brotherly ties and exceptional bonds between their people due to their shared religion.

This bond was very well appreciated by Prime Minister Sharif in a tweet in which he said,”My delegation and I were deeply impressed by the love that the people of Azerbaijan have for Pakistan and her people. The sight of Pakistani flags fluttering in Baku was a feast for the eyes. This people-to-people bond based on mutual love and respect is the strength of our relationship.”

After the meeting, both dignitaries conducted a joint press conference in which they briefed the media about the latest developments in their bilateral relations and reiterated their commitment to further strengthen the ties between Pakistan and Azerbaijan.

As a result of the meeting, a statement of understanding was signed between both states to promote trade and economic cooperation.

Highlights of the visit

Sharif was making this friendly visit to Azerbaijan at the invitation of the Azeri President, which started on June 14 and ended on June 15. This two-day visit is part of Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen its relations with Azerbaijan.

The first Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, Yagub Eyyubov, welcomed Prime Minister Sharif at the airport.

On the second day of the visit, Sharif, along with President Aliyev, received a guard of honor at Zugulba Palace. He also visited the mausoleum of the national hero and first President of Azerbaijan, Haider Aliyev, and paid tribute.

The Prime Minister also went to the Martyrs Monument in Baku and laid a floral wreath to acknowledge their sacrifice. Sharif also visited the museum and Multan caravan Sarai in old Baku city.

The visit concluded on June 15, when the Prime Minister departed for Pakistan. The Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan and other Azeri high officials were present at the airport at the time of departure.
