Islamabad, 17 June 2023 (TDI): Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, had a telephone conversation with his British counterpart, James Cleverly, who is the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom. The agenda of the discussion was to talk about the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and climate change.

During the conversation, both officials also discussed various issues of mutual interest. Foreign Minister Zardari emphasized the need to take firm steps to mitigate the devastating effects of climate change and the disasters occurring because of it.

Pakistan is largely suffering from the spillover effects of climate change in the form of massive floods like the one in 2022, which caused extensive damage to infrastructure and claimed numerous lives. Even the scars of these floods are still visible in some parts of the Sindh and Balochistan provinces of the country.

Pakistan has already made significant efforts to tackle the situation and play its role in combating deteriorating situation of climate in the form of a billion-tree tsunami campaign, renewable energy projects, and initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.

However, with such a fluctuating economy, Pakistan can not fight this global challenge alone, and more needs to be done on a global level to address the root causes of climate change and prevent further damage to vulnerable countries like Pakistan.

It is crucial for all nations to come together and take collective action to protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Bhutto Zardari also underscored the role of international financial organizations in providing support and resources to developing countries like Pakistan to deal with the impacts of climate change and help with the reconstruction of infrastructure.

In a nutshell, this conversation was about the need for time and reaffirms the commitment of both countries to combat climate change and work towards a better future for all. It also highlights the strong cooperative bilateral ties between both states.
