Beijing, 29 February 2024 (TDI): As air quality concerns escalate globally, Pakistan and China have intensified their collaboration to address the pressing issue of air pollution.
With China’s success in implementing science-based methods and promoting green development, Pakistani authorities have sought Chinese expertise to tackle air quality challenges.
Pakistan have lauded China’s green development model as an exemplar of sustainability and harmony between humans and nature, inspiring other developing nations to follow suit.
Furthermore, in recent months, there has been a surge in demand for China’s experiences and technologies in air quality control from developing nations grappling with deteriorating air quality.
Recognizing China’s achievements in this domain, Pakistani authorities have actively engaged with Chinese experts to learn from their successes.
China’s expertise in air pollution control
In January, authorities in Pakistan’s Punjab province invited Chu Yangxi, an associate research professor from the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), along with two other Chinese experts, to share insights on air pollution control strategies.
This marked a significant step in bilateral cooperation, with Pakistan seeking to implement effective measures to combat air pollution similar to those undertaken by China over the past decade.
Chu Yangxi, reflecting on his visit to Pakistan, remarked on the unique opportunity to provide scientific and technological support to a country involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.
This underscores the growing importance of international collaboration in addressing environmental challenges.
Meanwhile, CRAES welcomed a delegation of 85 military officers from various countries for a workshop focused on environmental issues, including air quality management.
Zhang Mengheng, Director of CRAES’ International Cooperation Center, highlighted the keen interest shown by the officers in China’s successful air pollution control measures.
Many expressed surprise at witnessing clear skies in Beijing, contrary to their expectations of severe pollution, prompting inquiries into China’s strategies for achieving cleaner air.
Pakistan’s commitment to collaborate
Pakistan’s commitment to collaborating with China on air pollution control aligns with its aspirations to ensure clean and breathable air for its citizens.
Moreover, Pakistani officials have expressed eagerness to leverage China’s expertise in tackling air pollution and achieving sustainable development goals.
Mr. Assadi, a spokesperson for the Pakistani government, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate change, a significant contributor to air pollution.
