Manila (TDI): A Philippine-flagged cargo ship sank near an island in the central Philippines, resulting in one fatality and two crew members reported missing, the coast guard said on Tuesday.
The vessel, Jerlyn Kathness, was overwhelmed by large waves in the San Bernardino Strait near Samar Island on Monday.
Passing ships managed to rescue 11 of the 15 crew members during the night, according to coast guard station commander Bryhl Amay.
After spending over 25 hours in the water, another crew member swam ashore to the small island of San Juan early Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, fishermen recovered the body of a crew member near Biri Island, Amay added.
