MOFA Pakistan expressed grief over Jorge Sampaio’s death

Islamabad, 13 September 2021 (TDI): Asim Iftikhar, Spokesperson of Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed grief over the death of former President of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio, who died on 10th September 2021.

Jorge Sampaio founded the Socialist left movement in 1974. But later joined the socialist party of Portugal. He was the mayor of Lisbon from 1990 to1995 before becoming President. He was the President of Portugal from 1996 to 2006. Moreover, he also held important positions in the United Nations (UN). He was appointed as the first Special Envoy for the Global Plan to Stop Tuberculosis. By the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. In 2007, Jorge Sampaio was designated as High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations until 2013.

In 2015 he along with Dr. H. Ndume, of Namibia, was awarded the United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize in recognition for his service to humanity while promoting UN’s purposes and principles and paying tribute to Nelson Mandela’s legacy of reconciliation, political change, and social transformation.
