New York, 15 September 2021 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid held a meeting with the Secretary-General of United Nations, Antonio Guterres.
The 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) marks a watershed moment for the Maldives. For the first time in the history of the Maldivian nation, a Maldivian official will serve as the President of the UNGA. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid was elected to the seat with an overwhelming majority of votes. The Maldives over the last few years have emerged as a significant player in the International arena. Especially over the last three years, it had vocally advocated for several global causes, most importantly as a climate champion fighting for the priorities of Small Island Developing States. The world has accepted Maldives’ position in international statecraft.
