Brussels, 11 September 2021 (TDI): Senior Officials Meeting was held between European Union and the Maldives in Brussels. The main objective of the meeting was to enhance cooperation between the Maldives and European Union.
Both parties reaffirmed their willingness to further strengthen bilateral relations. Also, working together in the context of the EU Strategy on Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. The discussion in areas of strategic importance was also under consideration i.e. green recovery, climate change, good governance, judicial reform, and security. Maldivian officials thanked the European Union for support in pandemic and also post-pandemic developments.
The European Union expressed appreciation for the Maldives towards consolidating democracy, promoting human rights, strengthening rule of law, and fighting corruption. The government of Maldives requested European Union to consider granting visa-free travel for Maldivian nationals. Also, this act will strengthen existing relations between both and will help to boost the economy.
