-

New York, 02 October 2021(TDI): Kenya takes up the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for October 2021. Ambassador Martin Kimani, the permanent representative of Kenya to the UN is the new President of the UN Security Council.

Martin Kimani stated that the Council will have two high-level events, chaired by Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya. The first, on October 12, will focus on diversity, state-building, and long-term peace, while the second, on October 28, will focus on cooperation between the UN and regional organizations, notably the African Union.

The Security Council will focus on women empowerment, peacebuilding, and security. Furthermore, reaffirming solidarity between the UN and the African Union will be a priority. Martin Kimani said.

Raychelle Omamo, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, spoke at the press conference as well, discussing the issues facing the African continent in an increasingly inhospitable world, in which the COVID-19 outbreak brutally exposed disparities and inequities. The threat of insurgents, external intervention, and climate change, made the Security Council’s job crucial for international peacekeeping.
