US-JORDAN RELATIONS

The United States shares a long history of cooperation and friendship with Jordan. The diplomatic ties between the two countries were established diplomatic relations in 1949.

The US and Jordan share mutual goals of an all-around, just, and enduring peace in the middle east. Both are also advocates of ending violent extremism that threatens the security of Jordan, the region, as well as the entire globe.

Along these lines, the United States has helped Jordan in maintaining its stability and prosperity via economic and military assistance and through close political collaboration.

Likewise, the two have also partnered against ongoing regional unrest, as well as international turmoils emanating from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The US has encouraged the Jordanian efforts to continue to enforce critical political and economic reforms to secure an adequate future for the Jordanian people.

Jordan was also designated as US major non-NATO ally by the United States in 1996 based on shared strategic goals and close working relationships.

Economically, the two states enjoy close ties. In 2020 Jordan and the US marked the 20th anniversary of the US-Jordan Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The US-Jordan FTA is the first US FTA with an Arab country. The FTA has allowed diversification of the Jordanian economy through expanding bilateral trade between Jordan and the United States by over 800 % since 2000.

Apart from the FTA the US and Jordan have an “open skies” civil aviation agreement, a science and technology cooperation agreement, a bilateral investment treaty, and a memorandum of understanding on nuclear energy cooperation.
