Gold Medal shared between competing athletes of Qatar and Italy at Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo, August 02, 2021 (TDI): Competing athletes from Qatar and Italy shared gold medals in the men’s high jump final.

The men’s high jump final was held at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday. The competing Athletes Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy both tied with a 2.37-meter mark.

The Olympic official told them that they could get an extra jump off to decide who wins the gold medal but Barshim asked if they could have two gold medals instead. Both players agreed on sharing the position and the decision was approved.

Both the players clasped hands and whooped for joy. It was an emotional scene accompanied by the applaud by the spectators. It was the first time since 1992 that the gold medal was shared in athletics.

Barshim stated, “He is one of my best friends, not only on the track but outside the track. We work together. This is a dream come true. It is the true spirit, the sportsman spirit.”

Previously, both the athletes suffered an ankle injury in an Olympic match, and they couldn’t play the match due to it and missed the gold medal as well.
