France calls for stability between Serbia and Kosovo

Paris, 9 February  2024 (TDI): Nicolas de Rivière, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, addressed the United Nations Security Council today, emphasizing the urgent need to stabilize the situation between Serbia and Kosovo.

France reiterates its stance that stability and normalization are central elements for European rapprochement for both countries.

He calls upon both Serbia and Kosovo to refrain from any unilateral actions that could exacerbate tensions. Recent actions by Kosovo, including decisions on currency and operations of the Kosovar police resulting in the closure of Serbian structures in certain regions, have raised serious concerns.

He urges for the immediate suspension of such decisions by the Central Bank of Kosovo to allow for a sufficient transition period. It stresses the adverse effects of these actions on the daily lives of the Serbian community in Kosovo.

The statement made yesterday by Kurti, Prime Minister of Kosovo, acknowledged the need for a transition period, which is considered a positive first step. He emphasizes the long-overdue resolution of the status of Serb parallel structures exclusively through the establishment of the Association of Serb Majority Municipalities.

In addition, Nicolas added that France condemns the attack on Banjska on September 24. He also calls for a thorough clarification of the circumstances surrounding it, urging for those responsible to be brought to justice.

He emphasized the necessity for both countries to reach an agreement that would bring a lasting settlement to their dispute. He also expressed appreciation for the role played by UNMIK and KFOR, emphasizing the unacceptability of attacks against them.
