New York, 25 September 2021 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, met President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly and Foreign Minister of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The meeting marked the discussion of developments in Afghanistan, the Kashmir issue, the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change.
The Foreign Minister congratulated his Maldivian counterpart on selection as the President of the UNGA 76th session. Foreign Minister Qureshi expressed hope that under Mr. Abdulla’s presidency will bring important issues to the United Nations agenda.
Regarding Afghanistan, the Foreign Minister reiterated that continued engagement of the international community is necessary for averting a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. He also apprised the President about the humanitarian assistance provided by Pakistan in this regard.
Discussing the issue of Kashmir, the Foreign Minister said that the people of Kashmir should be given their due right of self-determination; as per the UNSC resolution.
Concerning COVID-19, the Foreign Minister said that efforts should be made to ensure equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and to overcome the havocs imposed by the pandemic.
Furthermore, both the leaders exchanged views on climate change. They agreed to take urgent measures to address the issue of climate change and environmental degradation.
