Geneva, 28 February 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Timor Leste, Adaljiza Magno participated in the Opening Session of the high-level segment of the 49th Session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) at the Palais des Nations.

The Palace of Nations is the home of the United Nations Office at Geneva, located in Geneva, Switzerland. The 49th regular session of the Human Rights Council is being held from 28 February – 1 April 2022.

During her stay in Geneva, Minister Magno held a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, the Nanaia Mahuta where she discussed bilateral, regional as well as multilateral issues.

Aside from that, Adaljiza Magno also discussed the candidacy of Timor Leste (East Timor) to the Human Rights Council from 2024 to 2026.

The Timorese Foreign Minister also held a bilateral meeting with the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Professor. G.L. Peiris on the sidelines of the 49th Session of HRC.

During the meeting, the two counterparts expressed the desire to establish diplomatic relations between Timor Leste and Sri Lanka. They also discussed strategies pertaining to future cooperation.

In addition, Minister Magno presented as well as requested the support of Sri Lanka for Timor Leste‘s candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the period of 2024-2026.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Timor Leste landed in Geneva on 26th February to attend the High-Level Segment of the 49th Session of the Human Rights Council.

The session has been convened in Switzerland. Upon arrival in Switzerland, she was welcomed by Ambassador Lurdes Bessa.

During her meeting with Ambassador Lurdes Bessa, Minister Adaljiza Magno discussed the prospects of Timer Letse’s candidacy in the Human Rights Council from 2024 to 2026.
