Brussels, 6 October 2021 (TDI): Josep Borrell, High-Representative/Vice-President of the European Union Commission, and Ylva Johansson, Commissioner for Home Affairs, will convene a High-Level Forum on Afghan protection tomorrow. The conference is a follow-up to G7 and special Justice and Home Affairs Council talks on Afghanistan.
The goal is to guarantee that the EU’s actions to safeguard Afghans are consistent with global coordination and cooperation initiatives.
Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Interior from the EU Member States, as well as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, representatives from the European Parliament, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, and the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, António Vitorino, will meet to discuss in a virtual setting. In the afternoon, top officials from Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States will meet to continue talks.
Participants at tomorrow’s Forum will address the present situation in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries, as well as ideas for mobilizing more assistance for Afghans in need. Participants will also examine short and medium-term plans for additional safe and legal pathways for Afghan nationals deemed most vulnerable, as well as reception and integrating measures for Afghan refugees.
