EU ‘alarmed’ by conditions of Palestinian prisoners

Jerusalem, 5 November 2021 (TDI): The European Union made a statement regarding the critical conditions of Palestinian prisoners. Along with other detainees, they have been on hunger strike for more than 100 days. They are protesting their detention without charge or trial.

Kayed Fasfous and Miqdad Qawasmeh have been hospitalized for over a month. Palestinian prisoners have been demanding an end to their detention without charge or trial. Furthermore, the punishment is based on a secret file that even their lawyers are not allowed to view.

The European Union statement also called Israeli authorities to respect international law and cease the extensive use of administrative detention without formal charges. Moreover, the regional organization pointed out that all detainees have the right to be informed about the charges against them.

The State of Palestine condemned Israel’s widespread administrative detention policy, as it allows the Israeli army to keep Palestinians in prisons. It is also not based on accessible information and keeps Palestinians from standing trial.

The period of administrative detention orders ranges between four to six months without trial, and is based on a “secret file” provided by the Israeli intelligence service and is renewed successively.

Through different statements, the State of Palestine is criticizing Israel’s policies in the treatment of Palestinians. The different accusations include the brutality of the occupying state and its forces. As well, human rights violations especially in relation to freedom of movement, expression, and the right to property. Therefore, on October 20, Palestinian authorities called on Antonio Guterres to open an immediate investigation in the occupied city of East Jerusalem, and other territories.
