Egypt’s engagements at G20 Foreign Ministers summit

Rio de Janeiro, 22 February 2024 (TDI): Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, met with counterparts from different states on the margins of the G20 Foreign Ministers summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Moreover, the G20 foreign ministers arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

According to the ministerial reports, the pressing topics of conversation during the G20 summit revolved around addressing poverty, climate issues, and escalating global conflicts.

During the G20 summit, ministries from the world’s major economies criticized Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, the Russia-Ukraine conflict took the top spot on the discussion agenda.

Egypt and Indonesia strengthen bilateral relations

In response to the current situation, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed Egypt and Indonesia’s strong mutual relations with Retno Marsudi.

Reportedly, Egypt participated in the meeting for the fourth time, having already attended three as a guest in 2016, 2019, and 2023.

During the discussions, both leaders appreciated the strength of their bilateral partnership and teamwork, stated Egypt Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.

Furthermore, Minister Shoukry stated, “Egypt hopes for Indonesia’s support for Khaled Anany’s appointment to the position of UNESCO director-general, citing his educational background and management abilities.”

On top of that, both parties addressed the situation across the Gaza Strip, the spokesperson stated.

Egypt’s diplomatic engagements

Following the sidelines at the G20 Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting, Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, expressed deep regret over the UN Security Council’s failure to reach a decision on establishing a truce in the Gaza Strip.

At the end of the discussions, Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, appreciated Indonesia’s support for the Palestinian people.

On the other hand, during the G20 Foreign Ministers summit discussion, Retno Marsudi highlighted Egypt’s role in providing humanitarian aid to the isolated region. Additionally, she emphasized Egypt’s attempts to mediate a peace agreement.
