China and Cuba agree to enhance cooperation under the ambit of BRI

Beijing, 28 December 2021 (TDI): Cuba and China have signed a cooperation plan for mutual interests. The two will facilitate the construction of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The agreement between the two countries will serve as an impetus for further collaboration by supporting the synchronous benefits of the two partners as well as Latin America.

Cuba-China to cooperation under BRI

The head of the National Development and Reform Commission of China, He Lifeng, and Cuban Deputy Prime Minister, Ricardo Cabrisas signed a document this week.

As a result, the MoU signed in 2018 will be effectively implemented, making the country an active member of the BRI. This will pave way for enhanced cooperation between the two partners.

As per the agreement, China and Cuba will cooperate in wide-ranging fields, under the ambit of BRI. The cooperation will be in the spheres of technology, culture, infrastructure, education, tourism, communications, energy, and biotechnology.

China-Cuba ties

Moreover, over the years, China and Cuba have increased their collaboration under China’s principle of mutual advantage on the grounds of equality toward countries in Latin America.

Recently, China and Nicaragua resumed diplomatic relations. Consequently, the relationship between China and Latin America has further strengthened.

The two partners have robust economic synergy. In addition, they also cooperate in the energy sector and in this regard Chinese companies have carried out relevant collaborative projects in the Latin American country, for mutual benefit.

Furthermore, in terms of clean and green energy, the cooperation between the two has manifested in the form of wind power and photovoltaics; what with the energy sector being the priority of the socio-economic development plan of Cuba.

Aside from active collaboration in the energy domain, China is the largest trading partner of Cuba in terms of goods. Whereas, Cuba is the second-largest trading partner of China in the Caribbean region.
