Qatar’s 50th Anniversary of UN Membership

New York, 28 December 2021 (TDI): The Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres congratulated the country on Qatar’s 50th Anniversary of UN Membership.

The message was received by the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani.

The UN Secretary-General congratulated Qatar, the government, and the people, on the anniversary. The country, over the past 50 years, has made multiple contributions to the organization. Qatar contributes in the fields of sustainable development, conflict prevention, combating terrorism, climate action and health, at the regional and global levels.

Overview on Qatar’s membership at the United Nations

Qatar has been a member of the United Nations since 1971. In the same year, The Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in New York was created. Since then, Qatar manages its relationship with the international organization.

The country’s strategic partnership with the United Nations and has always worked towards achieving its goals. These include maintaining international peace and security, supporting international development, promoting human rights, providing humanitarian assistance, and participating in collective action to address existing and emerging challenges facing the world.

Secretary-General Statement on Qatar’s Anniversary of UN Membership

Antonio Guterres noted that the State of Qatar has hosted, over the years, a number of vital UN conferences and events. Therefore, it demonstrates push-forward solutions based on global policies.

Furthermore, the UN Secretary-General said that Doha has become today an important center for diplomacy. For instance, it facilitates some of the most complex conflicts in the world, especially in Afghanistan. In this context, Qatar provides critical support for dialogue through diplomacy and generous humanitarian aid.

Moreover, his Excellency pointed out that Qatar contributed to combating the COVID-19 pandemic and provided life-saving vaccines. Hence, Guterres thanked the country for its unwavering support for the UN.

For her part, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani reflected the pride and honor of the State of Qatar to receive the message. As well, she pointed out that the country will continue to improve diplomacy through dialogue and regional consensus.
