Sharm El-Sheikh, 8 November 2022 (TDI): The President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Zayed Al Nahyan delivered a speech at the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, COP27 in Egypt.

Al Nahyan addressed the opening session of the conference in presence of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi of Egypt and other world leaders, heads of state, and ambassadors.

The President stressed the significance of international cooperation to find practical solutions to climate change. He declared the present time as critical for the planet and future generations.

He emphasized the severity of climate change by saying “The dangers of climate change affect everyone without exception, and the future of our children and grandchildren depends on the measures we take today.”

He also highlighted the role of the UAE as a responsible energy provider and efforts to accelerate the global energy transition and enable sustainable economic growth.

In this regard, he gave the example of recent initiatives of the UAE government such as the Partnership for Accelerating Clean Energy agreement signed between the UAE and the US to show the commitment of the government to the cause.

Talking about carbon neutrality, he said “By our geology, the oil and gas we have in the UAE is among the least carbon-intensive in the world. Nevertheless, we will continue to work towards reducing carbon emissions in the sector.”

He also mentioned that UAE is looking forward to hosting the next session of Climate Change, COP28 in 2023 at Expo City Dubai. The representation of youth and women will be increased in the upcoming conference, he mentioned.

Al Nahyan concluded the address by thanking the efforts of Egypt in hosting COP27. He invited everyone to find solutions to climate change and present them when the UAE hosts COP28 next year.

It is pertinent to mention here that the President of UAE, Zayed Al Nahyan is accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Mansour bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah bin Zayed, and Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Special Affairs Advisor at the Ministry of the Presidential Court.
