Sharm El-Sheikh, 7 November 2022 (TDI): The US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry arrived at Sharm el-Sheikh for COP27.

John Kerry thanked Egypt for hosting the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27).

John Kerry stressed the importance of limiting warming to 1.5° C and implementing related plans to tackle the climate crisis.

He highlighted the commitments to building on the progress made in Glasgow COP26. Moreover, he reaffirmed the adherence of the US and other states to the protocols of climate change.

COP27

The 27th COP is being held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from 6 November-18 November 2022. The key purpose of the conference is to fulfill the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The goal and vision of COP27 include mitigation, adaptation, finance, and collaboration. At COP27, the countries will pledge to fulfill their commitments toward delivering the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

Paris Agreement

Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. It was adopted in 2015 by 196 countries at COP21, Paris. It entered into force later in 2016.

This is a multilateral climate change process and a binding agreement for all the signatory states for a common cause to combat climate change.

The goal of the Paris agreement is to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Conference of the Parties

In international law, the conference of the parties (COP) is a supreme governing border of an international treaty or convention between and among states. There are various kinds of COPs for different agreements and treaties.

After the signing of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), COP is associated with meetings of one particular committee.

In 1992, 154 countries signed the UNFCCC, since then the COP meetings have been held annually, and are referred by their number in series.
