CNN Founder Ted Turner Dies at 87

Ted Turner, the outspoken American media magnate who revolutionized global journalism by founding CNN, has died at the age of 87, according to a statement from Turner Enterprises.

Turner, born Robert Edward Turner III in 1938, transformed a modest family billboard business into a sprawling media empire that reshaped how news is produced and consumed worldwide.

His most enduring achievement came in 1980 with the launch of CNN, the world’s first 24-hour television news network; an innovation that permanently altered the pace and reach of journalism.

At a time when critics doubted there was enough news to fill a full day of programming, Turner’s gamble proved transformative.

CNN’s around-the-clock coverage became a defining feature of modern media, influencing not only television but also the rise of real-time digital news and social platforms.

Known for his bold personality and unconventional leadership style, Turner earned nicknames such as the “Mouth of the South” and built a reputation as a risk-taking entrepreneur.

Before CNN, he pioneered cable television’s “superstation” model by turning an Atlanta broadcaster into a national network, laying the groundwork for the cable boom.

Turner’s influence extended beyond media. He owned major sports franchises including the Atlanta Braves and helped popularize them nationwide, while also launching ventures such as the Goodwill Games.

In business, he cemented his legacy with the 1996 merger of Turner Broadcasting with Time Warner, creating one of the largest media conglomerates of its time.

A prominent philanthropist, Turner donated $1 billion to the United Nations, one of the largest charitable gifts in history, and co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative to reduce global security risks. He was also an environmental advocate and one of the largest private landowners in the United States.

In 2018, Turner revealed he had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disorder. No official cause of death was immediately disclosed.

Despite personal and professional challenges, Turner remained a towering and often controversial figure whose vision reshaped global communication.

His creation of CNN not only redefined television news but also helped usher in the era of instant, continuous information; an enduring legacy that continues to shape the modern media landscape.
