Helsinki (TDI): Finland’s very young first‑term Member of Parliament for Social Democratic Party, Eemeli Peltonen, aged 30, was found dead inside the Parliament House, an incident which is being investigated as an apparent suicide.
Though the incident is fresh, authorities are largely ruling out the possibility of any foul play leading to the death of Eemeli Peltonen.
Emergency services responded swiftly after a call to the parliament building around 11 a.m. local time, and the death was confirmed within hours. In response, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo suspended all parliamentary activity for the day and held a minute of silence in the deceased MP’s honor.
Parliamentary Speaker Jussi Halla-aho described Peltonen as “a well-liked colleague who was respected across party lines,” while Tytti Tuppurainen, chair of the Social Democratic parliamentary group, mourned the death saying “… a young life has ended far too early.” The Finnish flag was lowered to half‑mast countrywide as a sign of mourning.
Peltonen had been on medical leave since June due to a kidney condition diagnosed as minimal change disease, complicated by a bacterial infection contracted during treatment. He had posted updates on social media detailing his recovery and treatment.

“I’m already discharged from hospital, but due to the situation I’m on summer sick leave and I’m now fully focused on recovering from the illness,” he wrote on his social media.
It is noteworthy that the Finnish Parliament is on a summer recess, and Peltonen chose to take his life during this time.
The news has been received across Finland with shock and grief, prompting a discussion on mental health, the pressure and responsibility of a public role, illness in young age, and suicide.
Peltonen entered politics early, first elected to Järvenpää’s city council when he was only 18, and later becoming the youngest chairman of its city board. He secured a seat in Parliament in 2023 representing Uusimaa, garnering 5,747 votes, and served on the Administration and Legal Affairs Committees.
