Chinese Foreign Minister meets Afghanistan’s acting Deputy Prime Minister

Doha, 26 October 2021 (TDI): Wang Yi, the Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister met with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the acting Deputy Prime Minister of Taliban interim government. The meeting took place in the Qatari capital of Doha.

Agenda of the Meeting

The two sides discussed the prevalent situation of Afghanistan. China, along with Russia and Pakistan, has been helping the war-torn country by offering aid, especially after the exit of US troops.

Wang Yi said that the country is at a crossroads and China will help Afghanistan. Additionally, this is the right time for Afghanistan to master its destiny through reconciliation and nation reconstruction.

Situation in Afghanistan

Afghanistan is going through economic chaos, humanitarian crisis, terrorist threats, and governance difficulties, simultaneously. Thus, it needs help of the international community to tackle the  afore mentioned challenges.

China is Optimistic About Afghanistan’s Future

The Chinese Foreign Minister expressed optimism about Afghanistan. He stated that the Afghan Taliban will show openness, unite ethnic groups to work together for nonviolent reconstruction, and efficiently protect the rights of women and children.

China Will Support Afghan People

He also urged the Taliban to implement a friendly policy towards its neighbor countries. Moreover, he enunciated his country’s position on Afghanistan’s sovereignty. China always respects a country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Hence, it will aid Afghan people to determine their future and choose a path, independently.

Restoration of Peace and Stability

Besides, China seeks to support the restoration of peace and stability. Wang Yi reiterated this stance by expressing his country’s willingness to provide continuous humanitarian aid to Afghanistan by providing assistance to overcome temporary hurdles.

East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM)

During the meeting, the Chinese Foreign Minister also underscored the threat imposed to the peace of the region by terrorist organizations like the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM). According to him, such organizations aim to undermine stability and peace. He expressed his hope that Afghan Taliban will take effective measures against such organizations.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, on his part, updated the Chinese Foreign Minister on the current situation of his country. He said that the situation was well under control and was improving. The governments have been established at all levels and decrees are being effectively carried out.

Interim Government of Afghanistan

The interim government of Afghanistan is working hard to handle the situation in the country. It will continue to take all-encompassing measures to establish an inclusive government. Additionally, the Taliban are implementing efforts to protect the rights of women and children. The aim is to ensure their rights to education and work. Women are working in medical institutions, airports, and other places. Also, girls in primary and secondary schools in many provinces have returned to school.

Need for Humanitarian Aid 

Nevertheless, the country is facing economic, financial, and humanitarian challenges because of a dearth of facilities and funds. The acting Deputy Prime Minister expressed his hope that China and other countries will increase assistance to overcome the humanitarian crisis.

Afghanistan Expressed Appreciation for China

He appreciated China on the behalf of his government for supporting Afghanistan during this difficult time. The interim government aims to pursue a friendly policy towards China to enhance cooperation in several fields.

Furthermore, he reiterated his government’s support for China’s security concerns. The Taliban will honor its promise and ensure that no untoward incident happens.
