Chinese envoy to UN on Afghanistan

New York, 17 August 2021 (TDI): On Monday, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, during the emergency meeting called by the United Nations Security Council on Afghanistan underlined the Chinese take on the current Afghan situation.

Geng mentioned that China respects the wishes and choices of the Afghan people. Geng further added that the current priority of China in Afghanistan is to ensure peace and stability in the state without any unwanted bloodshed and diaspora.

Geng also added that China has always sought a political solution in Afghanistan. The Taliban should refrain from any terrorist activities and should fulfill their commitment to making Afghanistan a safe and peaceful state, added Geng.

While highlighting the current Humanitarian conditions in Afghanistan, Geng mentioned that the International community should help and step up humanitarian aid for Afghanistan and its surrounding states who have received the large influx of Afghani people. ‘The relevant parties should ensure that the work of international humanitarian relief agencies can continue unhindered.

The international community should also continue to help Afghanistan and its neighbors to control COVID-19’, said Geng.

Geng also underlined the absence of regional players and said as many council members in the meeting mentioned the role that the regional members and neighboring states have to play in the current scenario, it is regrettable not to have them here.

Lastly, Geng added, keeping in view the current situation in Afghanistan, China is hoping that the United Nations Secretary-General would take adequate measures to secure security for UN personnel in Afghanistan.

He also stated that China looks forward to the Secretary-Generals practical and feasible opinions and suggestions on the future of UN involvement in Afghanistan, as soon as possible.
