China Strikes Back at Trump’s Tariffs

Beijing (TDI): China on Friday announced a slew of countermeasures against tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, including additional tariffs of 34% on all US goods and curbs on export of some rare earths.

China’s finance ministry said the additional tariffs would be imposed from April 10.

Trump on Wednesday announced that China would be targeted with a 34 percent tariff, on top of the 20 percent he imposed earlier this year, bringing the total new tariffs to 54 percent.

Agriculture trade took another hit as Chinese customs imposed an immediate suspension on sorghum imports from grain exporter C&D (USA) Inc, and poultry and bonemeal from 3 American firms.

Beijing also announced controls on medium and heavy rare-earths exports, including terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, samarium, gadolinium, scandium and yttrium to the United States, from April 4.

The statement termed the US’ reciprocal tariffs one-sided “bullying,” adding that they violate global trade rules and harm China’s rights and interests.

“The motive of the implementation of export controls on relevant products in accordance with the law is to better protect China’s national security and interests, and to meet global obligations such as non-proliferation,” the commerce ministry said in a statement.

It also added sixteen US entities to its export control list, which prohibits the export of dual-use products to affected companies.

Another eleven US companies were added to the “unreliable entities” list, which allows China to take punitive action against foreign entities.

The targeted companies include Skydio Inx and BRINC Drones over arms sales to Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory.

The commerce ministry said the targeted firms seriously undermined national sovereignty, security and growth interests of China and would be banned from new investments, import and export activities in the country.

It also started an anti-dumping investigation into imports of certain medical CT tubes from the United States and India, and a wider industry competitiveness probe into medical CT tubes imports.
