New York, 3 August 2022 (TDI): The Tenth Review Conference of Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is scheduled to take place from 1 to 26 August.

During the meeting taking place on 2 August, envoys of member countries of the treaty shared their remarks about the issue of nuclear proliferation.

The Chinese Ambassador shared his views on Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). NPT is a cornerstone of the international nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime.

He highlighted that the specter of Cold War mentality is still there, while the outdated
approach to security based on military alliances has resurfaced.

The deteriorating global strategic security environment is straining the non-proliferation regime.

China’s Proposals

The Chinese ambassador stated that the global community needs to uphold the concept of common security in advancing international nuclear disarmament.

He further mentioned that the states must follow the principles of ‘maintaining global strategic stability’ and ‘undiminished security for all’.

He stated that states with a large number of nuclear arsenals should significantly reduce them in a legally binding manner.

Chinese ambassador further stated that nuclear-weapon States need to work together to reduce nuclear risks. He further mentioned that the leaders of China, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France issued a Joint Statement.
