President Putin on the Tenth NPT Review Conference

Moscow, 2 August 2022 (TDI): President Vladimir Putin of Russia sent a message of greetings to the participants and guests of the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

In the message, the President acknowledges NPT as a key element in the international security and strategic stability system.

President Putin stated ‘We believe that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought, and we stand for equal and indivisible security for all members of the world community.’

He further added, ‘We believe that all NPT-compliant countries should have the right to the peaceful use of the atom without any additional preconditions. We are ready to share our experience in nuclear energy with our partners.’

President Putin expects that this Conference will reaffirm the willingness of all states to comply with the nuclear non-proliferation regime. Their commitments will make a significant contribution to ensuring peace, security, and stability in the world.

Non-Proliferation Treaty

The Non-Proliferation Treaty is the cornerstone of the nuclear non-proliferation regime. The Treaty has contributed hugely to the prevention of the spread of nuclear weapons.

It created conditions for progress towards nuclear disarmament. The treaty also contributed to productive international cooperation in peaceful uses of atomic energy.

NPT Review Conference

The NPT allows for the parties to gather every five years to review its operation. At the 1995 Review and Extension Conference, the parties formalized the practice of convening a Review Conference every five years.

The Tenth Review Conference was postponed from 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, the parties decided to hold the meeting in August of 2022 at the UN headquarters in New York.

The Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons will be held from 1 – 26 August 2022.
