New York, 25 September 2021 (TDI): The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev addresses the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly virtually. The President congratulated Abdulla Shahid as the President of the 76th session of UNGA.
President mentioned that the COVID-19 pandemic is challenging for the whole world. The Azerbaijan Government has taken practical measures to protect the population. Also, to minimize the negative impact of the pandemic. The socio-economic stimulus package worth almost $2.7 billion has been released in this regard. The situation with pandemic has been kept under control and the quarantine regime has been gradually eased in the country. Azerbaijan carried out all these activities with its own financial resources. In 2020, the World Health Organization hailed Azerbaijan as an exemplary country in fighting the pandemic.
The President stressed that there is deepening inequality in access to vaccines between developing and developed countries. These actions prevent developing countries from protecting their populations. Azerbaijan initiated a resolution on ensuring equitable and universal access for all countries to vaccines. He suggested there is a need to establish a UN High-Level Panel on Global Recovery from the COVID-19.
The President drew world attention towards the continuing occupation of territories of Azerbaijan by Armenia. Also, the aggressive statements and actions of the Armenian government. Azerbaijan did large-scale construction in liberated territories. Baku has already announced its readiness to embark upon the border delimitation and demarcation between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Azerbaijan is ready to negotiate a peace agreement with Armenia, said the President. This agreement would turn the region into a region of peace and cooperation.
The President called the attention of the international community to play a positive role. It should urge Armenia to realize that peace has no alternative. He hoped that long-awaited peace, security, and stability will prevail in the Southern Caucasus. He assured that Azerbaijan will continue its consistent efforts to contribute and to strengthen regional peace and development.
