New York, 28 September 2021 (TDI): Ghulam Isaczai, who represented the former regime of Afghanistan at the United Nations, pulled out of delivering an address to world leaders at the UNGA 76th Session.
Last week, the Taliban wrote a letter to UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres. They asked for the participation of Afghanistan’s new Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi. They also mentioned that Isaczai no longer represents Afghanistan at the global level. Moreover, the Taliban nominated their Doha-based Spokesman Suhail Shaheen as Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
A nine-member credentials committee comprised of the US, Russia, and China was supposed to approve the Taliban’s request, but they did not meet on time.
